Travel hacks for tech

Taking gadgets on your trip? Follow these tips to keep your tech in tip-top shape.

  • Your phone can be an invaluable resource when travelling – from getting you around town to showing you great local deals to documenting your adventures – so keep it working everywhere by purchasing a global SIM card. youGo offers a free global SIM card with the purchase of international travel insurance policies (some exclusions apply).
  • Use the camera on your phone for the ultimate travel photo. If you are Instagramming your trip, take pictures with your regular camera first and import into the Instagram app later (the camera quality is shockingly sub-par on Instagram compared to many smartphones). • Log on to FourSquare to get WiFi passwords at different establishments. Often these are hidden in the comments.
  • Bring the proper power cords and adapters and you will be a hero to other travellers. If you forget your wall plug, you can often charge devices through the USB slot on your hotel television. And if you forgot your charger, you can often ask hotel staff if they have one you can borrow for the duration of your stay. No matter what, though, it’s a great idea to buy a portable phone charger or charging case to use when you are not near a wall plug.
  • Keep cords tidy by wrapping them around old gift cards or binder clips. A mess of cords in your bag wastes more space than you realize and digging through them will be a nightmare for your seatmate.
  • If you are headed to a water parks or to the beach, put your phone inside a plastic bag to prevent it from accidentally getting wet.
  • Create the ultimate in-flight movie experience when there isn’t one by placing your phone in a plastic bag and securing it to the seatback of the seat in front of you. Poke a hole in the side of the bag to insert your headphones.
  • Splurge on Internet service if your flight will last more than six hours. Trust us, you cannot hold a conversation with the stranger next to you for six hours. It just can’t be done. Plus, you can get nearly a full day’s work done in the process, so maybe your transit days don’t have to count against you at the office.
  • Splurge on Internet service if your flight is more than six-and-a-half hours long. You’ll thank me when you find that sparking conversation with your seat partner is harder than pulling teeth. Plus, you can complete work for the last time before you hit your destination.
