Hints for a successful campervan road trip
Heading out on the open road is a dream vacation, whether you’re going alone, with a small group of friends or with family. There are even studies saying camping makes you happy. From choosing the right vehicle for your trip and group to practical tips on the road, here’s how to make your first caravan vacation go smoothly.
Choose the right vehicle for your trip
From campervans to tent trailers and motorhomes, picking the right vehicle affects your budget and your experience.
Trailers
From small tent trailers to camper trailers and fifth wheels, these trailers have the advantage of unhooking from your car and allowing you to drive separately after you reach your destination. Some of the smaller tent trailers will easily hook to a small vehicle while larger fifth wheel trailers require a sturdy, pickup truck.
Just remember that the extra space is not accessible while travelling as passengers are not permitted in trailers while they are underway.
Motorhomes
A true home away from home, motorhomes offer showers and toilets (but require maintenance for them). The extra space is available to passengers while travelling—a great bonus for families. However, you are with your vehicle all the time and they can be difficult to park when you go into town for supplies.
Campervans
Campervans offer the best of both worlds—the additional space is available while travelling and the vehicle is small enough to park easily. These are best suited for small groups as space is limited. Many families supplement campervans with a tent for additional space.
Use a pre-departure checklist
Use a checklist every time when you are preparing to leave. A few things to include on your checklist:
- Full tank of petrol
- Tire pressure in car and caravan
- All hatches closed
- Gas tank secured
- Fire extinguisher in place
- All drawers and cupboards are secured
- The fridge door is closed and locked
- Travel insurance policy information (in case you need to make a claim)
- Auto insurance information
Hints for a successful trip
On the road
- If it is your first time caravanning, you are likely driving a heavier vehicle than you are used to. It takes longer to stop, so leave more space between you and other cars.
- Get in the habit of taking a walk around the van and car whenever you stop for a break. Double check for any wear, that hatches are closed and secured, etc.
- Carry a tow rope and a set of battery leads. If you get into trouble, it makes it easier to get help. And it lets you be ready to help others.
Around camp
- Refrigerators take about 24 hours to reach their optimal temperature. You can help by putting cool items in rather than trying to cool things down from room temperature.
- Get a level app on your mobile. You can check your site and level your vehicle.
- Take gardening gloves for collecting wood.
- Go solar—use solar lights for your pitch. Then take a few inside for nightlights. You can use solar chargers for you cell and other portable electronics now too.
- Use a headlamp for any night time excursions to free up your hands.
- If you are trying to head out early in the morning, take down your awning the night before. This will prevent you from packing it up with morning moisture (or having to wait until it is dry). This prevents mildew and damage to the fabric.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice. Chances are your neighbours have experienced the same thing—let their experience work for you.
