If you will be hitting the road in the next couple weeks, chances are you may be a part of the crew that makes the trek from Sydney to Melbourne. It’s a popular choice for caravanning groups around this time of the year, and for good reason. The drive is one of Australia’s best; it captures the essence and personality of Australia’s beauty. As you drive along the cost, you will find quiet but gorgeous fishing villages, wonderful pristine beaches, natural rainforests and National Parks scattered all over. Besides these obvious benefits, there is no better way to explore the South Coast of NSW than on a drive from Sydney along the coast to Melbourne. The highlights that can be found along this trip’s route are many and varied but there are few you really shouldn’t miss.
Wollongong
Wollongong has beautiful beaches and lagoons, and is nestled beside some very interesting areas. Wollongong used to be a very industrial city but now has since become a modern and vibrant city with a number of superb restaurants, varied accommodation options and attention-grabbing attractions. Check Novotel North Beach for caravanning accommodation options.
Kiama
Kiama is gem of a village that was discovered back in 1797. The little town is surrounded by beautiful beaches, a harbour and two free-flowing rivers. Kiama is famous for the “Blow Hole”, which spouts water high into the air at certain times during the day—it all depends on the tide. You could spend a whole day in this area exploring the Minnamurra rainforest, Seven Mile Beach, and the Carrington Falls and Cathedral Rocks. Kiama also has plenty of accommodation available for all types of budgets and needs. The best kept secret is the East Beach Holiday Park which sits on 35 acres of beachfront property.
Jervis Bay
Jervis Bay is famous for the whitest sand in the world, and its crystal clear waters. Head to Huskisson in the centre of the Jervis Bay tourist haven. If you are into nature, then Jervis Bay will be a delight. It’s full of pristine beaches within the Booderee National Park and is ideal for all activities—hiking, rock climbing, diving, snorkelling, fishing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing.
Ulladulla
Ulladulla is a famous holiday destination for many Australians, partially because it offers excellent accommodation and plenty of activities and attractions for families but mostly because this area is covered with wonderful beaches. It also oozes with personality and character. If you’re travelling with your family, it’s a great spot to stay for a day or two.
Batemans Bay
This area is blessed with the local lakes of Durras, Coila and Tuross which are popular for water sports and fishing. While visiting Batemans Bay, take a drive out to the lovely village of Mogo where you can easily while away an afternoon. Batemans Bay is a great place to stay overnight; there are plenty of restaurants serving fresh seafood and pubs for entertainment. If you have the time or interest, you can also take a cruise up the Clyde River and drop into the historic village of Nelligen. Check Big4 Batemans Bay Beach Resort for caravanning accommodation options.
Bermagui
Bermagui is a gorgeous small coastal village that is well-known for its fishing, but also as the Northern Gateway to the Coastal Wilderness. Surrounded by National Parks and stunning seascapes, Bermagui offers travellers a wonderful and unique stay with spectacular scenery and boutique services. Bermagui has its own commercial fishing fleet and the Fishermen’s Wharf complex which overlooks the harbour, offers a small selection of restaurants, cafes and fresh seafood. While here, you can wander along quiet beaches, learn the history and mystery of Montreal Goldfield, explore the national parks or watch the latest catch come in. Check out Ocean Lake Caravan Park for accommodation in Bermagui.
Bega
Bega is famous for Bega Cheese, which is appropriate, given this is primarily a dairy country where dairy farms are scattered through the gorgeous green, rolling hills. The Aboriginal meaning of this name is “big camping ground” and it’s appropriate as Bega has at least one caravan park that you can stay in.
Traralgon
Traralgon is a vibrant and lively town that has plenty of accommodation options, in addition to great restaurants and busy bars. This is also where the Latrobe Performing Arts centre lives. Look online to see their schedule and if the show interests you, snag a ticket and get an extra taste of culture. There are a number of rainforests and national parks that dot the area around Traralgon if you prefer nature to cities.
Finish planning out your caravanning adventure, and remember to purchase travel insurance before you hit the road. Even domestic travels can run into their fair share of problems and mishaps. With a policy in your back pocket, those mishaps become bumps in the road instead of roadblocks from enjoying the rest of your holiday.
