Morocco’s ultimate outdoor activities
Morocco’s excitingly diverse terrain offers some fun and adventurous outdoor sports for the whole family to enjoy.
Diving in Morocco
Morocco is situated along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and has 4000 kilometres of exciting, diverse marine life and coastlines to explore. If your family is less proficient in diving, the Mediterranean coast will be the perfect starting point with its calmer waters. The Cabo Negro is less difficult than other areas of the Mediterranean and will be the best place to start for young family members or if this will be your first time.
If you have more experience with diving and want an adventurous experience, head to the coastlines along the Atlantic Ocean, like Agadir. You’ll find sunny weather year-round, continental drop-offs, and exciting wreck diving. This will be the most unforgettable experience in Morocco.
White water rafting in Oum-er-Rbia
Morocco offers two of the most beautiful mountain ranges for white water rafting. For those up for a challenge (and those with the right travel cover, of course), the Oum-er-Rbia is a trip that starts off mild but will gradually increase to a vigorous adventure that will make you put in work. It is nicknamed “Mother of Spring River,” due to the forty springs that run out from it. You can access it via the villages of Beni Mellal and Khenifra.
If you want a beautiful, scenic route head to the Middle Atlas, in the waters of Ahanssel, as you descend along the clear rapids. If you want the full immersion, then arrange overnight camping as you travel along the river.
Hiking in Morocco
A popular activity in Morocco is a hike along the beautiful mountain ranges. The High Atlas Mountains are great for the experienced trekkers and the unspoiled terrain is something you have to see to believe. It is perfect for overnight stays and long distance experiences.
The most popular trek is among the Djebel Toubkal, Northern Africa’s highest point. It takes about three days to complete the whole trek or you can do a simple short trek. Regardless of the distance you decide to perform, in a short time you’ll find yourself high in the mountains among Berber villages, surrounded by mesmerizing landscape.
If you want a very relaxed, easy hike head to Essaouira’s Atlantic coastline. You can stroll among sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages, and orchards of olive trees.
Mountain biking in the High Atlas
Mountain biking is a fun adventurous activity around the world and in Morocco it is one of the most exciting activities you can do. If you are more experienced and want a daring joy ride, head to the High Atlas Mountains. The jagged, rocky climbs will be a feat for even the most experienced but when you finish, you’ll feel successful and accomplished with beautiful memories to look back on for a lifetime.
Community football
Football is the most popular sport in Morocco, and arguably the world. The national team, the Atlas Lions, are well-respected in Africa, so if you want a fun way to connect with the locals, head out and find a local game to join in on. You will get in some fun activity and likely make some new friends along the way. Afterward you will have the best insight into the local hotspots in Morocco.
As with all adventure sports, there is an element of risk associated with participating. By no means does that mean you should sit it out and miss out on the experience, but it does mean that you should consider your health and the potential medical bills that could come with an injury in a foreign country. Instead of getting stuck with an astronomical medical bill, get adventure sport travel insurance. With youGo’s 24/7 support line, you will have a friendly voice ready and able to help you wherever you are.
