5 unpredictable places you should visit

There are some places in the world that make it on to everyone’s bucket list—we’re thinking about Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Rio de Janiero, New York City and many more. The draw to these places is clear. The cities feel magical and new and everyone has talked about the incredible times they’ve had in these super-star cities that have played and continue to play a large part in shaping the culture of our world.

Truthfully, it’s getting harder and harder to travel somewhere that isn’t completely untouched by tourism. After all, many small places rely on the income from tourism to keep their businesses afloat, and if the customer wants a certain experience, these businesses will likely cater to it. There are plenty of locations that were once considered remote—or even generally unknown—that are now easily accessible via train or plane.

We know that the great cities of the world aren’t going anywhere, so why not go somewhere now that is more unpredictable and off-the-beaten path? In these spots you will be your own tour guide and you (mostly) won’t have to compete for space or search for peace as you explore and enjoy your holiday.

Montreal, Canada

If you are looking for a taste of Europe in North America, look no further than Montreal in Canada. There are 18th century buildings that you can tour via bicycle, old cafes with delicious drinks, and interesting people. Plus this city knows how to party. Their social calendars are chock full of festivals—over 90 of them—where artists, writers, musicians, and more come to get down and have some fun. In Montreal the people are friendly, the food is delicious and there are endless activities and places to explore. It’s easily one of the most international cities in North America.

Hipster alternative: Vancouver, Canada has a growing hipster scene. If you’re up for a Canadian adventure, jet over to this unpredictable city.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

Located in the northern part of Norway, the Lofoten Islands are perfect destination for nature lovers. The islands are known for the excellent fishing and natural attractions (can you say Northern Lights?!) as well as for the small villages that are tucked all over. If the fishing and other activities aren’t enough to sway you to visit, consider the scenery. It is some of the most awe-inspiring backdrop the world over, and your camera’s memory card will be full before you know it. Explore Lofoten by foot, raft down the Trollfjord, visit the Viking Museum, taste stock fish and marvel at the midnight sun.

Kathmandu, Nepal

You may already know that Kathmandu (pronounced Cat-man-do) is the capital of Nepal, but what you likely don’t know is that it’s an incredible place for backpackers looking for adventure. The city will open your eyes to a place of constant activity, bustle and noise. While initially overwhelming, as you grow accustomed to the sights, sounds and smells of Kathmandu, you will fall in love with this city. The quiet backstreets, the backpacker district of Thamel, and hidden temples all hold pieces of the real Kathmandu. It’s waiting for you.

Budva, Montenegro

Consider Budva your new holiday playground. It is the centre of Montenegrin tourism and as such draws hordes of tourists (usually from Russia and Ukraine) to its shores. There are beaches, the Old Town and a rapidly developing city. One downside to the jump in tourism is that Budva has lost some of its charm to the nouveau riche who fill the city and block up the marina almost year-round. At its heart, Budva is a beautiful and historic town with excellent beaches and an endless nightlife. If you like to party, you’ll fit right in.

El Chalten, Argentina

This small mountain village overlooks the incredible colourful and beautiful northern part of the National Glacier Park. Thousands of trekkers come to the area to make use of the world-class trails that start right around El Chalten, but recently, more and more trekkers are sticking around to see what the little town is all about. El Chalten was founded in 1985 and to this day it keeps a tight hold on its hippy vibes. It is the perfect spot for backpackers and adventurers.
