Google Maps
Alright, this is a standard app for every one – but it’s especially helpful in a new city. If you don’t want to get absolutely lost in a new city, go with Google Maps. Keep in mind, however, that if you are travelling in China, these maps don’t always work reliably, so plan a back-up.
Technicalities
Available in the App Store, Google Play and as a web app.
WorldMate
If you have been on a business trip, you have probably used this handy app—and if not, you’re welcome for the promotion you’ll get after presenting the idea. WorldMate is designed to combine all of your travel booking info to build a business itinerary and a schedule for business meeting. It has an Outlook add-in and integrates with your LinkedIn account.

Jet Lag App
Is your sanity worth A$4? If so, get the intuitively-named Jet Lag App and never suffer again—(ok, that might be an oversell; reduce your suffering considerably). Input your travel dates, destination and usual sleeping times and this clever app will provide you a personalized alarm clock.
Note: there are plenty of jet lag apps on the market (and even more jet lag tips), so shop around and find the one that’s right for you. Many of these apps are very similar, so don’t feel overwhelmed by choices.

HearPlanet
‘Bring the World to Your Ears‘. If you struggle with guidebooks and haven’t mastered essential travel phrases, but want to learn all you can, get this app which reads information about specific locations to you. Information is farmed from Wikipedia and its own crowd-sourced database.

Swearport
“Become a Global Swearing Master”. While not the most sophisticated app on this list, Swearport is certainly one of the most fun. Tell a Belgian local where he can put his waffles or ask a Russian to check your oil (if you know what we mean) with this neatly indexed catalog of international expletives.
Technicalities
Available in Google Play.
The Entertainer
This app knows there is ‘always something to smile about’. You never have to choose between travelling cheap and travelling well again (ok, maybe sometimes, but you get the idea). The app covers 23 cities and gives you coupons around the city you are visiting. The Entertainer explores various merchants, from hotels to hairdressers to restaurants, near your location that offer buy-one-get-one-free discounts. Users just have to show the app and redeem the coupon when they’re at the location.
Technicalities
Available almost everywhere—in the App Store, Google Play, the Windows Phone Store, Samsung GALAXY Apps and BlackBerry World.
Google Translate
Unsurprisingly, Google saves the day again. The Google Translate app has the standard features you probably expect, but it also has some really cool ones. See a sign you need translated? Take a picture and Google Translate will easily solve the problem for you. This app also includes pronunciation guides.
Technicalities
Available in the App Store, Google Play and for Google Glass (if those are even still a thing).
Foodspotting
Our final must-try app handles the most important element of any trip—picking a great place to eat. While there are tons of crowd-sourced restaurant review apps available, Foodspotting responds to every gastronomic whim you may experience. No matter where you are or what you want to eat, you are bound to find a ‘foodspotted’ review to help. Eat cheap around the world, or eat gourmet every day—it’s up to you with Foodspotting.
