Overview of the Philippines

The Philippines are a long way away from mainland Southeast Asia — in more ways than one. Composed of over 7,000 islands and a coastline that beats out the United States, there’s really no surprise that most of the Philippines’ most stunning attractions can be found in or around the sea. Speaking of the sea, you’ll be hooked on it the second you see it or dip your toes in the water. There are warm, tropical waters that are turquoise blue above the waves and crystal clear once you dive below. Beyond the beaches, there are plenty of other natural attractions like archipelagos, mountainous interiors and dense jungles waiting for people to explore them. If you want to play at Survivor, there’s plenty of space to find a deserted spot to pitch your tent and camp out along the coastline with just the waves for company.

Once you emerge from the relaxed state the beaches are sure to lull you into, you can get moving by spelunking in the Samar cave systems, or trying to kite board in Borocay or getting involved with any number of water sports. As mentioned above, a lot of the action happens around the water, and in line with that, some of the world’s best diving and scuba diving is available in the Philippines. Unlike other countries that have plenty of corny tourist-centric cultural shows, you won’t find that in the Philippines—but you will find warm, welcoming and happy-go-lucky natives that want you to discover the history and pride they hold for their country. Find your place in the Philippines where Catholic European traditions, Spanish influences and vibrant Asian culture all mingle.

Things to See and Do

Bacuit Archipelago

You won’t be able to put your camera down when you visit this picture-perfect territory. There are dramatic cliffs of limestone, stunningly clear lagoons and the requisite white sand beaches. If you want to get off the shore, try hiring a Bangka, or outrigger boat, and spending the day on—and in—the water. Snorkelling is a perpetual favourite activity and when you’re stuffed from the fun, you can enjoy a seafood barbecue while sunning on the beaches.

Explore Colonial Heritage at Vigan

During the Second World War, a vast majority of the country’s older buildings were destroyed. That’s just one of the reasons that Vigan, a UNESCO-listed town, is such a rare and special place. Some of the remaining building have been turned into museums, and others have been converted into heritage hotels. In feeding into the older vibe and history of Vigan, tourists can even take a horse-drawn carriage around the walkable and friendly city.

Hike Mount Apo

Standing at an impressive 2954m, Mount Apo, or “Grandfather”, is the highest peak in the Philippines and is a popular destination for experienced trekkers. Beyond trekking, there is also a way to take in all the sights and sounds—from the air. One of the longest zip lines in Asia has been built and operates off Mount Apo’s southern slopes. And what sights there are to see! The Mount Apo mountain range has plenty of dense forest, waterfalls, river rapids, mountain lakes and more.

Relax on Santa Cruz Island

If you have to pick one spot in the Philippines to cool off, swim, surf, relax and generally de-stress, then you should pick Santa Cruz Island. It’s located off the coast of Zamboanga in Mindanao and there is plenty to do to create the holiday that suits your fancy. Whatever you do, head to their sandy beach though, where the sand often turns pink due to the corals from the sea being washed ashore—it’s a sight you won’t want to miss.

Get to Know Manila

Explore old Manila and see the remains of the massive wall that protected the Spanish walled city called “Intramuros”. Other highlights in Manila include San Agustin Church, which has a small museum to learn more about its history, Casa Manila which is a perfect reconstruction of a wealthy family’s home from back in the day and the ruins of Fort Santiago.

Seasonality

Weather in the Philippines is completely controlled by the prevailing winds. Generally, the habagat monsoon runs from May to October and the amihan monsoon is in charge from November through early May.  The amihan monsoon tends to be the dry season and the wet season begins in June and lasts through October. As with many Southeast Asian countries, any time is a good time to visit with the exception of Holy Week (near Easter). Hotels are booked extremely far in advance and costs in the country skyrocket.  Weather in the islands have become less predictable in the last couple years, but January through May tends to be the most reliable time to visit.

Travel Tips

  • There’s no point in glossing over the fact that the Philippines has more than a fair share of dangers and annoyances.  In the south of the country, kidnapping is not unheard of, though getting ripped off or scammed in bigger cities like Manila is significantly more likely.
  • Beyond crime, and depending on your sensibilities and values, seeing the outright and blunt prostitution scene can be quite disturbing—especially if you are unlucky enough to see evidence of the active child prostitution industry.
  • The most common scam in the Philippines is to drug a tourist’s food or drink and then rob them. Be VERY wary of any offer of food or drink.
  • Manila itself can be a struggle for travellers who aren’t used to a similar scene or environment. Overwhelming poverty, extreme air and noise pollution, never-ending crowds and frustratingly heavy traffic situations are all the norm in Manila. If you think you’ll have trouble handling this, perhaps try visiting Carcar Town for a similar vibe, with a touch more sophistication and modernity than Manila.
