Overview of Thailand

In this modern day and age, it is hard to find a place that still resonates with its cultural past. Thailand has kept up with the ever-changing advances of the world but has almost perfectly preserved their traditions.

Where to go and what to See

Bangkok

In the heart of Thailand, is the capital city of Bangkok. Boasting the title of one of the most cosmopolitan cities and the most traveller-friendly places in Asia, you will find all of the exciting events you could possibly want while easily navigating yourself around the city to find hidden gems.

Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is one of the most majestic features in Bangkok. With an enormous size, you will easily need to block off a full morning or afternoon to see all that it has to offer. The palace was the official residence of the Kings of Siam and then later the Kings of Thailand from 1782 until 1925. Though not used as the official residence, it is still used for official events. Rather than being a single structure like most palaces are, the Grand Palace is made up of numerous buildings, halls, pavilions, lawns, gardens and courtyards. With all of this architecture and design, you will have much to explore and discover.

Wat Phra Kaew

Situated among the palace grounds is the most sacred Buddhist temple of Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew. In English, this translates to Temple of the Emerald Buddha and is rightfully named as it holds The Emerald Buddha. This statue is carved from a single piece of jade stone and measures about 66 centimetres tall. No person, other than the Thai King, is allowed to touch the statue. The king changes the cloak on the Buddha three times a year, signifying the changes between the three seasons: summer, winter and rainy.

Khao Sok National Park

Covered by the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world, is the Khao Sok National Park. Containing over 5 percent of the world’s wildlife, you are likely to spot wild mammals such as the Asian elephant, tigers, bears, wild boars, among others.

Sukhothai

A small city in Thailand, this is a popular tourist destination due to its ruins of the ancient city, or old Sukhothai. During the 13th century, Sukhothai was the Thai capital. The province’s temples and monuments have been restored and you can take a step into history. You can rent a bicycle and peddle around taking in the sights of many restored ruins and many untouched pieces. Another great option is exploring by tuktuk. The drivers are usually well-versed in English and will guide you around, showing you secret areas that you may not have otherwise found on your own, as well as, explain Thai culture in depth. When you have explored all that the old city has to offer, you can head to the new city and grab a bite at the fresh market.

Pattaya

For the beach-lover looking for some seaside enjoyment, you can head to Pattaya and enjoy one of the many beaches in this area. Though this city has much more adult-oriented offerings, it is becoming more family-friendly. You can find a crocodile farm, an elephant village and an underwater world for family-friendly options. There are also a few theme parks that are interesting, though maybe not the most exciting for younger children. Bowling, golf and cinemas are other fun activities for all ages. For adults, this city offers cabaret performances, water sports and wineries.

Phuket

Thailand’s largest island facing the Andaman Sea to its west, and offers many water sports for a memorable experience. You can participate in the ever-popular free-diving experience, snorkel around the reefs, or head out on a sailing adventure. For a bit of pampering, Phuket is also a popular destination for spa visits, with their secret oases of comfort and pleasure. Many spas offer pampering packages for incredibly affordable prices or for the true luxury seekers, you can make a longer trip to one of the most exclusive spas in the world. While these spas offer treatments are likely to relax even the tensest muscles, these luxury spas are not for the budget-conscious.

Climate

Bangkok is one of the hottest cities in the world, so it’s best to plan accordingly when visiting. The ‘cool’ season provides a much more enjoyable visit to this incredible city, so perhaps plan to go between November and February. If you have to be in Thailand during March or April, you may want to keep your activities indoors, in the air conditioning, as this is the hottest time of year for Bangkok. Also plan for wet season from May until October, where you are likely to experience much rainfall. The heaviest rainfalls will occur between September and October, so this too may be a time that you don’t want to visit, unless absolutely necessary.

Thailand has endless fun waiting for you when you get there. The last thing anyone wants to think about is the potential for trouble or accidents to occur when you’re overseas.
